1. Set a purpose before reading
- Define what you need from the book (specific answers, general overview, deep mastery). Purpose determines speed: skim for facts, read slowly only for dense core sections.
- Not all pages deserve equal attention. Most nonfiction books carry 70–80% of value in 20–30% of the text.
2. Preview before reading (2–5 minutes)
- Read the table of contents, chapter titles, introduction, and conclusion.
- Scan headings, bold text, bullet lists, and chapter summaries.
- This builds a mental framework, which accelerates comprehension during full reading.
3. Use the SQ3R method for dense material
- Survey → Question (turn headings into questions) → Read → Recite (summarize from memory) → Review.
4. Train eye mechanics
- Use a pacer: move a finger or pen under lines to guide your eyes and reduce backtracking (regressions).
- Read in chunks: absorb 3–5 words per fixation instead of word-by-word.
- Expand peripheral vision: focus slightly above the line’s center rather than tracking each word.
- Suppress subvocalization: silent inner pronunciation caps speed near speaking rate (~250 wpm). Reduce it by focusing on meaning blocks rather than individual words.
5. Measure and push
- Test baseline: words per minute (wpm) = (pages read × words per page) ÷ minutes.
- Practice 10–20% above comfortable speed; comprehension catches up within days to weeks.
- Consider RSVP apps (single-word flash display) for training, not primary reading.
6. Optimize conditions
- Eliminate interruptions (notifications, multitasking); flow-state reading roughly doubles effective speed.
- Batch reading into focused 25–50 minute sessions.
- Build vocabulary and background knowledge — domain familiarity is the single largest speed factor for technical texts.
7. Retain while reading fast
- Annotate margins, highlight sparingly, and write 2–3 sentence chapter summaries.
- Use active recall (self-quizzing) instead of rereading.
Realistic limits
- Average adult: 200–300 wpm. Trained readers: 400–600 wpm with solid comprehension.
- Above ~600 wpm, retention degrades sharply — claims of 1,000+ wpm with full comprehension are not supported by research.
- Speed reading is inappropriate for material requiring deep processing (mathematics, dense philosophy, legal text). Match speed to material, not a fixed target.
